Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for New York City Apartments

A real Lily Maids story

David had two apartments. And two days.

David R. was moving out of a fourth-floor walk-up in Williamsburg into a place eleven blocks away, and the calendar had stopped being his friend. Movers booked for Thursday. Old lease ending Friday at noon. And a construction site next door to the new apartment that had been quietly coating every windowsill in fine gray dust for a month.

He had a checklist. Everybody has a checklist. What he did not have was two free days.

So we split the job. One team went into the old place Thursday afternoon, right behind the movers, when the rooms were finally empty enough to reach the parts that actually matter — inside the oven, behind the fridge, the top edge of every door, the closet shelves that had been holding sweaters since 2019. A second team took the new apartment Friday morning, before a single box came through the door, and pulled the renovation dust off the sills, the radiator fins, and the inside of the kitchen cabinets.

"It was such a relief to start this new chapter in a truly fresh and clean space," David wrote afterward.

Here's the part worth stealing from his move: he cleaned the new apartment before he moved in, not after. An empty apartment takes a fraction of the time and gets ten times cleaner, because nothing is in the way. Once the couch lands and the boxes stack up, half the checklist below becomes basically impossible without hiring a moving crew all over again.

That's really what a move-out cleaning checklist is for. Not to make you feel behind. It's to tell you what order to do things in, and where the hidden hours are hiding. Everything below is what our teams run on every move-in and move-out cleaning across the three boroughs.

Step one

Kitchen checklist.

Its the single most looked-at room at a final walkthrough, and the one where a fast wipe-down looks most obviously like a fast wipe-down. Grease does not leave because you asked it politely. Start here, because it takes the longest and because everything else feels easy afterward.

Standard tasks

• Countertops, backsplash, and the wall behind the stove
• Sink scrubbed, drain and faucet polished, hard-water spots removed
• Cabinet and drawer fronts wiped, handles included
• Appliance exteriors: fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave
• Floors swept, then mopped into corners and along the toe-kick

Move-out additions

• Inside the oven, including racks and the glass door
• Inside the fridge and freezer, shelves and bins removed and washed
• Inside every cabinet and drawer, top shelf included
• Range hood filter degreased
• Behind and underneath the fridge and stove, where they can be safely moved
• Inside the microwave, roof and turntable
• Top of the cabinets, where a year of airborne grease turns into a sticky film

Two things people miss almost every time: the rubber gasket around the fridge door, and the little drip tray under the burners on a gas range. Both are quick. Both get noticed.

Step three

Bedrooms, closets and living areas.

These rooms are fast once they're empty, and slow if they're not. That's the whole story. This is the part of the checklist most affected by whether the movers have already been through.

Standard tasks

• All surfaces, shelves, and sills dusted
• Mirrors and interior glass cleaned
• Switch plates, outlet covers, and door handles wiped
• Floors vacuumed and mopped, corners and edges included
• Trash and recycling removed

Move-out additions

• Inside every closet: shelves, rods, and floor
• Closet door tracks vacuumed out
• Baseboards wiped along all walls
• Door tops, frames, and trim dusted
• Ceiling fan blades and light fixtures
• Radiators, including between the fins
• Behind radiators and under built-ins where reachable

Keep a seperate bag going for anything you find in the closets that you don't want to move. Every single client finds something. It's easier to decide now than to carry it eleven blocks and decide later.

Step five

The final walkthrough.

Every super and every management company has slightly different priorities, but after enough turnovers you notice the pattern. The walkthrough almost always starts in the kitchen, moves to the bathroom, and then becomes a fast lap of the floors and closets.

Bring your landlords move-out letter with you if they sent one — a lot of NYC buildings have their own written list, and it usually mentions two or three things nobody would guess, like the intercom handset or the mailbox key drop. New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development publishes general standards for habitable conditions, and the New York State Attorney General's office publishes tenant guidance on security deposits worth reading before your walkthrough. We clean to a documented checklist, but deposit decisions are between you and your landlord — we don't make promises about that outcome.

Before you hand over keys

• Every closet, cabinet, and drawer emptied
• All personal trash removed from the unit
• Utilities and mail forwarding handled
• Photos taken of each room, dated, after the clean
• Keys, fobs, mailbox keys, and garage remotes gathered
• Storage cage or basement locker cleared, if you have one
