Step by step
Standard Basic Cleaning, plus the fridge.
A standard basic cleaning covers your kitchen counters, stovetop, appliance exteriors, cabinet fronts, sink, bathrooms, dusting, beds, and floors. The refrigerator interior sits outside that scope, which is why we treat it as a paid add-on. When you check the box, here's the order we work in: empty the shelves onto a clean surface, remove the glass and crisper drawers, wash them by hand, wipe the interior walls and ceiling, clean the door bins, then get into the rubber gasket where crumbs and sticky drips collect.
After that we dry everything, put it all back, and wipe the exterior including the handle - which, according to NSF International's germ study, is one of the dirtier spots in a home kitchen. If your fridge is packed, we ask you to toss expired items ahead of time so we're not making judgment calls about your leftovers.

Why a clean fridge is more than a nice-to-have.
Karen in Sunnyside came to us about allergies. She figured it was dust and pet dander. What she found once we started pulling shelves was mold along the back wall of her refrigerator - the kind that grows quietly behind a jar you never move. That's not unusual in a city apartment where the kitchen window stays shut nine months a year.
A few things worth knowing. Spills that dry on a shelf become a food safety problem, not just a stain - the FDA recommends keeping your fridge at or below 40°F and cleaning up drips right away so bacteria don't spread between foods. The door gasket matters too: a gasket caked with crumbs doesn't seal properly, which makes the compressor run harder and your electric bill climb. And if you've ever lost power in a heat wave, the FoodSafety.gov cold storage charts are worth a bookmark.
None of that requires a specialist. It just requires somebody to actually do it, on a schedule, instead of everyday life pushing it to next month. That's the job.

Is refrigerator cleaning included in a standard cleaning? 01
No. A standard visit cleans the outside of your appliances - the door, handle, and top - but not the inside. The fridge interior is a paid add-on you select at booking. It is already included in the scope of move-out and move-in cleanings, since landlords check it. Compare the two scopes on our standard cleaning and deep cleaning pages.
Do I need to empty the fridge before you arrive? 02
Not entirely, but please throw out anything expired first. We will take everything out, clean, and put it back - what we won't do is decide whether that container from two weeks ago is still good. Clearing obvious trash ahead of time also makes the whole thing faster. More prep tips on preparing for your cleaning.
How long does a refrigerator cleaning take? 03
Usually somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes on top of your regular visit, depending on size and how much is inside. A packed French-door with an ice maker takes longer than a compact unit in a studio. We build the extra time into your appointment window so the rest of the clean doesn't get rushed.
Can you clean the freezer too? 04
We can wipe out a freezer that is reasonably clear, and we handle the shelves and bins the same way we do the fridge. What we cannot do is defrost a unit with heavy ice buildup - that needs the appliance powered down for several hours, which is not something we can do inside a normal appointment. Mention the freezer in your booking notes so we plan for it.
What products do you use inside the fridge? 05
Food-safe cleaners only. No harsh solvents, no strong chemical smell left behind on surfaces that touch your groceries. If you have kids, pets, or allergies, ask for EPA Safer Choice certified products in your notes and we'll use those. Got a specific product you prefer? Leave it out with a note and the team will use it.
Will it get rid of the smell? 06
In most cases yes, because the smell is usually coming from a spill, an old container, or buildup in the drawers and gasket - all of which we remove. If the odor comes from the drip pan underneath or from a mechanical issue, that's an appliance repair matter and we'll tell you honestly rather than pretend otherwise. Karen in Sunnyside had mold along the back wall, and clearing that solved it.
Do I have to be home? 07
No. Most of our clients are at work while we clean. Doorman handoff, lockbox, or a smart-lock code all work - just add access instructions in your booking notes and we'll coordinate with the front desk. And if something isn't right, tell us within 24 hours and we'll come back and re-clean it at no charge. That's our satisfaction guarantee.
